Kavala, Hacı Baba Türbesi

Near the village of Leftere (Eleftheres), 20 km southwest of Kavala, there is the tomb of Hacı Baba Bektashi. According to the remains of the walls around the tomb, where there is also a large plane tree, it is likely that this was a dervish lodge consisting of buildings such as an imaret, a square house and a mosque. Although there is no Muslim population left in the region, the tradition of Hidrellez is still practiced by the local Christian population. H. Lowry states that on the third day after Easter, villagers would gather at the shrine with icons brought from the Church of St. Taxiarchis and chant welcoming spring around the plane tree.
