The town of Vrgorac is located at the southern tip of Croatia close to the Adriatic coast. The mosque in Vergoraz was dedicated to Mary by the Venetians in 1694 with the withdrawal of the Turks and converted into a Catholic Church. The 13-meter-high minaret of the mosque was used as a bell tower until 1861. The mosque, which survived as a church until 1913, was completely demolished on this date and the present-day Saint Mary's Church (Crkva Navještenja Blazene Djevice Marije) was built in its place.
