Koçan (Akrovounion) Village, located 25 km southwest of Kavala, was settled by Greeks from Anatolia after the exchange (1923). The mosque of Kochani, an old Turkish village, was converted into a church in 1924 by the newly arrived immigrants. The interior of the mosque, whose minaret was destroyed down to its balcony, was furnished with icons and a wooden cross was placed in front of the mihrab. Since the village was completely abandoned, the unused building was wholly demolished in 2014, except for the minaret, and a new church was built on the foundations of the old mosque. A wooden frame and a cone roof were built over the body of the minaret and turned into a bell tower.
